What is a receipt?

A receipt is a written record that confirms a payment was made and received. It states who paid, who received the money, the amount, the date, and what the payment was for.

For the payer it is proof of purchase or payment; for the person or business receiving the money it is a record for bookkeeping, taxes, and resolving any later disputes.

When do you need one?

Any time money changes hands and either side wants a record, a receipt is the simplest way to document it. Common cases include:
